A common question with drum tuning is, what frequencies should you choose for tuning the drums in your kit? Well, the answer is to experiment and decide what tunings suit you and your kit best. There is not perfect preset or single approach. It makes sense to have fairly even intervals between each drum, so a drum roll around the kit goes from low tones to high notes and vice versa. The intervals could be grouped closely together in the low range, or closely together in the high range. Or you may prefer wider intervals covering a larger range from low to high frequencies. It all depends on how many drums you have in the kit and what style of music you player, and personal preference too. In this video you can hear some examples. Here we have a 5 piece drum kit with coated drumheads. We have a 22 inch kick drum 10, 12 and 16 inch toms and a 14 inch snare. Initially, the drums are tuned relatively LOW to musical frequencies: The kick is tuned to a fundamental frequency of 61.5 Hz (B) 16 floor is tuned to 73.5 Hz (D) 12 rack is tuned to 87 Hz (F) 10 rack is tuned to 110 Hz (A) 14 snare is tuned to a fundamental of 174 Hz (F) All the drums are then tuned up to a MEDIUM range. The kick is tuned to a fundamental frequency of 69.5 Hz (C#) 16 floor is tuned to 82.5 Hz (E) 12 rack is tuned to 98 Hz (G) 10 rack is tuned to 123.5 Hz (B) 14 snare is tuned to a fundamental of 174 Hz (F) Finally, all the drums are tuned to relatively HIGH: The kick is tuned to a fundamental frequency of 73.5 Hz (D) 16 floor is tuned to 92.5 Hz (Gflat) 12 rack is tuned to 123.5 Hz (B) 10 rack is tuned to 147 Hz (D) 14 snare is tuned to a fundamental of 174 Hz (F) Notice that the snare drum tuning is kept the same each time. This is because the choice of snare tuning can be independent of the tuning of the toms and kick. Visit www.learndrumtuning.com to learn more about drum tuning.
