I make a gong out of a heavy bronze sheet. Step by step, I turn a bronze sheet by cutting, heating and hammering into a beautiful sounding instument. I dont use music so you can enjoy the sounds of the process. I also don't speed up the individual films, so you get a feel for the rythm and speed of the work. First, I cut the bronze sheet with the circular saw into a managable sized piece. With a electric shear, I trim the piece into a disc. After I formed a depression out of wood, I start hammering the disc into shape. After several rounds of hammering the disc into the wood, the bronze becomes workhardend. By heating the metal with a oxygen acetelyn torch, it becomes soft again. Now I can continue the forging. Throughout the process, I frequently check the sound the piece makes, by softly striking it with the wooden handle of the hammer. The sound continues to be better and better. To bring some tension into the sheet, I place the curve of the gong onto a steel anvil, and I stiffen the radius by hammering it with a planishing hammer for several thousand times. After the hammering, I hang the gong with a string, polish the metal and blacken the middle with a blueing solution. What do you think of the finished bronze Gong?
