Welcome to Richmond, California — 1940s. Shipyards are booming, families are arriving from all over the country, and life is tough but full of hope. Black families from the South, Latinos from Texas and Mexico, Japanese Americans returning from internment camps, and folks from the Midwest all came looking for work and a better future. This episode dives into the real story of Easter Hill Village, one of Richmond’s first permanent housing developments for wartime and post-war workers. We explore how housing policies, redlining, and segregation quietly shaped communities, created tension, and forced families to rely on each other — and on faith — to survive. From the Little Brown House, where neighbors first gathered to pray, to Easter Hill United Methodist Church at 3911 Cutting Blvd, we trace the history of a church that became a beacon of hope, community, and social justice. Leaders like Rev. Booker T. Anderson and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited to inspire, organize, and empower families facing systemic oppression. Today, Easter Hill continues that legacy with programs like the Richmond CDF Freedom School, teaching literacy, leadership, and social justice to children — all free for families in the community. 📸 Photo & Source Credits: Dorothea Lange Collection, Oakland Museum of California Historic American Buildings Survey (Library of Congress) Henry J.
