Exterior of Pakistan House STORYLINE : The prime ministers of India and Pakistan met in New Delhi on Wednesday to take forward efforts to end five-decades of hostility between the two nuclear rivals. Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz arrived in India on Tuesday for a rare top-level visit between the two countries. His meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was expected to extend the goodwill gained since January as the neighbours eased visa restrictions, resumed diplomatic contacts, and relaunched air and rail links. Both leaders are respected economists and are expected to focus on trade and business issues, apart from discussions on Kashmir, the Himalayan region over which the two countries have had a dispute since British colonial rulers left the subcontinent in 1947. Aziz also met Indian Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar to discuss the prospects of a 3 (b) billion US dollar pipeline through Pakistan linking India to Iran's massive gas fields. On Tuesday, Aziz met with Indian External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh, who "agreed to work for increased cooperation between India and Pakistan," according to Navtej Sarna, a foreign ministry spokesman. Aziz also called on former Indian Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, credited with restarting the peace process between India and Pakistan. And at a dinner hosted by Pakistan's ambassador late on Tuesday night, Aziz met with separatist leaders from the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir. The Indian Express newspaper reported the separatists reiterated their demand to be made a party to India-Pakistan talks on Kashmir. The All-party Hurriyat Conference - an alliance of political parties and religious groups in Kashmir - is campaigning for the Himalayan region's independence, or its merger with Pakistan. The Indian government has ruled out involving the Hurriyat in talks with Pakistan, but says New Delhi is always ready for separate negotiations. India accuses Pakistan of giving material help to the separatists and the militants, a charge denied by Islamabad. Pakistan says it only provides diplomatic support to the separatists' cause. Indian officials are trying to keep down expectations for any dramatic bilateral breakthroughs.
