Back around 1981 the last train crossed over the Seekonk River and through the East Side Tunnel between East Providence and Providence, RI. Since then the Crook Point Railroad Bridge, locally known as the "stuck up bridge", has been pointing to the sky awaiting an uncertain future. Less than 50 years earlier this bridge was supporting passenger trains every few minutes running from points as far out as Fall River, MA and Bristol, RI into the center of Providence. Freight trains also utilized the tunnel and bridge and continued long after passenger service ended. Now both the tunnel and bridge are severed from the national rail network but in recent years there have been proposals to reactivate both pieces of abandoned infrastructure to run light rail trains into Providence. All these proposals seem to be dropped after a period of consideration but in December of 2023 195 west closed severing the highway connection into the city. This resulted in a detour where traffic sat for hours on end not only in the greater Providence area but also affecting Newport, RI and Aquidneck Island. This failure of a critical piece of infrastructure proved that we need alternative modes of transportation into the city as well as in other affected areas. This video touches upon the proposals to use the tunnel and bridge again while also showing what we once had. It is crazy to think we had a reliable, frequent, and electric train running every few minutes between the affected points but doing that today would be considered a pipe dream. What once was the norm 100 years ago is something so coveted today, enough to make it into transit proposals as recent as 2019. Including in the video is historic footage filmed in the 1950's including passenger trains going over the bridge enroute to the Narragansett Race Track. This video also shows some footage of the now abandoned tunnel and bridge from various locations around East Providence and Providence, RI.
