Rylands Lunchtime Seminar: Revisualising Colonial Past in John Smith's Generall Historie of Virginia

Join Cultural historian Dr Rachel Whinchcombe and Rylands curator Julianne Simpson to discuss John Smith’s Generall Historie of Virginia (1624), a text produced at a time when the English settlements in Virginia were in a perilous position. Smith, while ostensibly producing a history of colonial Virginia, also sought a remedy to the dire circumstances his fellow Englishmen and women found themselves in. This session examines Smith’s argumentative strategy, arguing that it is reliant on visually recasting the colonial past. The manipulation of well-known images of Roanoke Algonquians contributed to changing understandings of Indigenous peoples and provoked debates over how English colonialism should proceed.
