Ramanand Jha ‘Raman’ (born 2 January 1949) is a distinguished scholar, critic, editor, and writer of Maithili literature whose contributions have significantly enriched the field of modern Maithili literary criticism and research. A native of Lalganj, Sarisab- Pahi in the Madhubani district of Bihar, he pursued higher education in Hindi and Maithili, completing his M.A. and later earning a Ph.D. from Patna University in 1982 with a research work focused on modern Maithili poetry. Alongside his academic and literary pursuits, he served with distinction as an officer in the Reserve Bank of India until his retirement in January 2009. Ramanand Jha ‘Raman’ has authored numerous influential works of criticism and literary study, including Navin Maithili Kavita (1982), Maithili Nav Kavita (1993), Maithili Sahitya aur Rajneeti (1994), Akhiyasal (1995), Besahal (2003), Bhajral (2005), Hiyawol (2012), Lakshmipati Singh: Vivran (2012), Chitir-Bitir (2014), Anusandhan-Pratiman (2018), Markandey Pravasi (2022), Beech-Bhashan (2022), and Vivart (2023). His scholarly engagement extends widely into editing and preserving important Maithili texts, having edited numerous significant works and historical literary documents, including early Maithili narratives, felicitation volumes, and facsimile editions of classical texts associated with figures such as Vidyapati and Govinda Jha. He has also translated The Universal Declaration of Human Rights into Maithili, making this important global document accessible to Maithili readers. This work reflects his commitment to promoting both human rights awareness and the richness of the Maithili language. Through his writings, editorial work, and critical scholarship, Ramanand Jha ‘Raman’ has played an important role in documenting, interpreting, and promoting the intellectual and literary traditions of Mithila, establishing himself as an eminent voice in contemporary Maithili literary discourse.
