The LUMS Social Entrepreneurship course was designed, architectural structured and developed in 2019 by Professor Syed Hussain Haider. He has over 30 years of social sector experience and volunteer services in more than 14 countries, but emphatically entrenched in Pakistan. This course was initially launched in spring 2020 and then again in Autumn Semester, now being offered in Spring 2021. 16 social enterprises nurtured in LUMS, 12 plus social enterprises developed and nurtured in different countries and additionally contributed to the development of over 65 NGOs/INGOs/volunteer organizations. Thousands of volunteers and students were personally trained around the globe by Professor Syed Hussain Haider. This course is unique in the way that it is practicum focused. It provides students with an arena where they unleash their potential by getting out of their comfort zones. Students learn how to be socially active and put extra effort into practical projects, which involves impactful interventions on the field. Considering the new COVID-19 normal, students also stretched themselves to initiate virtual projects. Last year, 11 Social Enterprises were formed, and they indulged themselves in social work both physically and virtually. In the dire situation of COVID-19 lockdown, they assisted thousands of families by providing food and other necessary items. Some of these initiatives were: Aagosh, Khandeh, Qadr, Umeed e Seher. Thank you Nabeel and Arooj, you are not teaching assistants.......you are FAMILY !!!!!. It would not have been possible without both of you🥰😊🤗♥️ The contribution of Rehan and Raiha is also appreciated🤩 This time, the course instructor and students went the extra mile to spread social awareness at the national level by introducing projects in different parts of the country. There are a total of 5 social enterprises, out of which 1 is based in Islamabad, 1 in Karachi, and 3 in Lahore. These 5 dynamic organizations are SILA, SERAAB, QURBAT, EHSAS, SHAMA-E-ILM. SILA is an Islamabad based enterprise where they have identified orphanages and created a network to connect them with donors. In the virtual project, SILA is catering to child abuse through awareness campaigns and therapy sessions. (For contact: Ahmed Jarrar: 03214744940) SERAAB is a Lyari Karachi based organization that has joined hands with Kiran Foundation. SERAAB has launched a two-month sign language course through an International interpreter/sign language expert. In the future, they are seeking to expand the scope of virtual social work. (For Contact:Talha Malik: 03314529752) QURBAT has collaborated with Mubeen School in Bhatta Chowk Lahore to create a Dream Room for students to interact and innovate in a growth-seeking environment. Along with that, they are inducing the importance of physical training and some techniques through online platforms. (For Contact: Danial Khalid: 03134222850) EHSAS has worked towards improving the living standards of Katchi Basti, based near Mustafa Town Lahore. They are facilitating them by providing them with warm clothes, other items essential for survival in winters and developing a community school. Since they realize the importance of a clean environment, therefore they are virtually spreading awareness about plastic waste in Lahore. (For Contact: Abdullah Niazi: 03364307703) All of these five enterprises have committed to assisting society in ensuring welfare. The recognition in the horizon of the course at the international level is proof that there is immense positivity in the community.
