We tried something unusual by wrapping the chimney in plastic as it had many holes the bees were using to access the inner cavity. We struggled for a few months to keep closing the holes so that only the one where the box was attached existed. Eventually, it worked, but there was no Queen bee in the box, which was evident by the only brood being drones which are usually from an unfertilised egg laid by a worker bee. We made the decision to remove the box without the queen and merged the colony with a weaker colony we had at our rehabilitation apiary in Olivedale Johannesburg. Please always use a responsible beekeeper to remove unwanted bees. All bees can be saved and there is never a need to kill them.
