The Fourth International Arctic Forum is underway in the northern Russian city of Arkhangelsk. Representatives of Arctic countries, as well as countries that have interests in the Arctic region, such as China, attended the forum. The forum is becoming a platform for China and Russia to reaffirm their ties and develop their joint interests in the Arctic. For the first time, the Chinese delegation, headed by Vice Premier Wang Yang, has set foot on that far north region. "Arkhangelsk is the gateway to the Arctic. I hope that this forum could open a new gate to the Arctic development and cooperation. China, as an important stakeholder, has long participated in the Arctic affairs in accordance with law," said the Chinese vice premier. Along with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, Wang Yang viewed an exhibition showcasing the latest technologies for the Arctic exploration. They also took part in the China-Russia intergovernmental group discussion on cooperation. During this meeting, the two sides discussed the Arctic exploration, the North Sea route, joint investment projects in the Arctic and scientific expeditions. "We are talking about complex exploration of the North Sea Route, using its transport capabilities, with the aim to raise the timing and effectiveness of transportation. Also cooperation in transport infrastructure, port infrastructure, potentially in the industry. But also tourism," said Alexey Gruzdev, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Russia. Chinese investors have been already deeply involved in the new seaport outside Arkhangelsk and the Belkomur railway that will cut the transport mileage from Siberia by 800 kilometers. Chinese companies are at the Forum to further discuss these projects with their Russian counterparts. The interests of China and Russia in developing Arctic region are on a quick rise. In 2016 Moscow and Beijing sent their first joint expedition to the region. More scientific projects and research expeditions are planned for the future.
