Defensive linemen are sometimes referred to by a numbering system called "techniques." These numbers range from 0 to 9—0-technique, 3-technique, 4i-technique, 5-technique, 7-technique, 9-technique—which correspond to where a defensive lineman lines up with respect to an offensive lineman.
