Dachshunds were bred in 16th-century Germany to follow badgers underground — alone, in the dark, in tunnels too narrow to turn around. Your blanket is that tunnel. This video explains why the burrowing never stopped — and why it can't. Dachshunds were not named by accident. Dachs means badger. Hund means dog. For hundreds of years, these dogs were selected specifically for one thing: the willingness — the eagerness — to enter an enclosed, dark, narrow space and stay there. Dogs that panicked in tunnels were not bred. Dogs that went calm in tunnels, that settled and worked, that found the enclosed space stabilizing rather than threatening — those were. That selection pressure is still in your dachshund today, sitting on your couch, circling before they burrow under your throw. But instinct is only part of the answer. Dachshunds also have a thermodynamic problem. Their long body and short legs create more surface area per unit of mass than almost any comparable breed, which means they lose body heat faster. Their belly runs close to cold floors. The blanket solves all of this simultaneously — it traps their own body heat, insulates from below, and stops heat bleeding into open air. There is also the scent. Dachshunds are scent hounds with hundreds of millions of olfactory receptors. They are not choosing any blanket. They are choosing yours. Your scent in the fabric signals safety to a nervous system that was built to work underground while an anchor — the hunter — held the surface above. They go under because you are there. They come out when you call. Does your dachshund burrow into a specific blanket — one that happens to smell like you?
