VIA Safety Day trains Halifax 30 April & 1 May 2016

About 8:30am, on a picture perfect 30 April 2016, CN gave VIA track occupancy of the line from Halifax Station to Halifax Shopping Centre and Bayers Road (mile 4.2). This allowed us to operate 6 trips in a train comprising VIA F40PH-2D 6418 and three HEP1 Stainless Steel coaches. 4 trips went as far as Bayers Road and backed back to the station - an 8 mile round trip that took about 30 minutes at speeds of up to 25mph. The other two trips went around the container terminal which Halterm was able to free for our use about midday. The second Halterm trip had to stop while the EHS helicopter landed at the Helipad and a patient was transferred to a waiting ambulance! The six trips carried about 750 people including many families with children. For many of them it was their first train ride and Operation Lifesaver was able to do a brief talk on rail safety introducing the children and their parents to the idea of "Look Listen & Live". The video shows the train departing from Halifax station, the view from the rear of the train as it backs up - NOTE the two trespassers a major problem in the area which has lead to many anxious moments for train crews. Then we see the train backing into Halifax station. After Safety Day was finished we see the Ocean arriving about 20 minutes late. After unloading the Ocean was turned on the balloon track at Halterm and the two Safety Day locomotives and 3 coaches were coupled behind the two locomotives from the Ocean and ahead of the Renaissance Baggage Car. This train is seen leaving Halifax from the Young Avenue Bridge on the Following Morning (Sunday 1 May 2016)
