Steam locomotive fighting 9% grade on one of the highest mountains in West Virginia. This train is pulled by a coal burning Shay steam engine on the Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, West Virginia. See how the crew uses the hand brakes to slow the train down and listen to the awesome steam whistle as the train crosses a public railroad crossing near the railroad yard. These locomotives were built for logging railroads with steep grades and sharp curves. 160.455 is the best frequency. Town of Cass was founded in 1900. Cass Railroad and the historic town are owned by the state of West Virginia. The railroad stopped hauling lumber in 1960 and was sold to West Virginia in 1961. The town was bought in 1976.
