Emerging out of the UK Acid House scene of the late 80s, The Grid became one of the most influential and popular electronic dance bands of the 90s. The London duo of Dave Ball and Richard Norris, collectively known as The Grid, have the kind of diverse backgrounds, music business connections and essence of originality which sets them apart from the mass of aspiring dance merchants. After Ball's memorable collaboration with Marc Almond in Soft Cell, he pursued a range of lower-profile soundtrack projects and guest collaborations. Norris, formerly a music writer and magazine editor, completed The Grid's writing nucleus when the pair met in 1988 whilst producing the seminal Jack The Tab compilation, one of the first British Acid House albums. The Grid singles 'Floatation' and 'A Beat Called Love', and the album Electric Head, followed in the wake of this inspired union, and it wasn't long before the pair found themselves doing remixes for the likes of Happy Mondays, Jesus Loves You, Pet Shop Boys, and Erasure. Dave Ball and Richard Norris notched up 10 UK hit singles, including the Balearic classic Floatation and the worldwide hit Swamp Thing. The pair have created many productions and remixes, Dave working with Marc Almond as Soft Cell, and Richard with Erol Alkan as Beyond The Wizards Sleeve. They were managed by Alan McGee. The Grid signed publishing deal with Mute Songs in 2021.
