Raising the Sparks: A Personal Search for a Spiritual Home in Judaism (running time 1:01:49, directed by Chuck Davis) explores Chuck Davis' decision to return to the religion of his birth. After twenty years of Buddhist practice and the birth of his first son, Davis found himself questioning his spiritual commitments and his relationship to his Jewish ancestry. In response, he sets out to discover a true spiritual path in Judaism, one that he hoped he could authentically ask his sons to embrace. Davis begins his journey with Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, the founder of the Jewish Renewal movement, and the World Wisdom Chair holder at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Oner the course of the Jewish liturgical year, Rabbi Zalman acts as both guide and counselor in Davis' quest. In the same year, Davis also meets with rabbis across Judaism's spectrum. He engages them in provocative discussions about the issues that have kept him at a distance from his birth religion—the importance and relevance of Hebrew and Torah, Jewish meditation, the place of prayer in secular life, the problems and possibilities of interfaith marriage, and the need for the Jewish laws in a postmodern world. The film features interviews with: Rabbi Ted Falcon, Rabbi Tirzah Firestone, Rabbi Michael Lerner, Rabbi Jonathan Omer-Man, Rabbi Marcia Prayer, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Rabbi Daniel Siegel, Rabbi David Zeller.
