The Painkiller was created by an English bartender named Daphne Henderson at a bar called The Soggy Dollar Bar on the island of Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands around 1971. The only way to get to the bar was to swim, hence the name. The story is that after it's creation word got out that she had created this secret rum drink and it became so popular that people began to come in droves to have this drink. The Painkiller was born! Originally this drink was made with Pussers Navy Strength Rum and it wasn't long before the founder of Pussers Charles Tobias took notice. The story goes that he went to the bar, tried the drink and loved it. Over time he became good friends with Daphne but would not reveal her secret recipe. Eventually Tobias was able to get a drink from the bar back to a boat and then his home on the island of Tortolla. There he set about breaking down the Specs. He knew the general ingredients so it wasn't long before he got to a ratio he thought was right. He returned to the bar to announce he uncovered the secret and they did a side by side comparison with some patrons and they unanimously agreed that Charles' was the better version as it was ever so slightly less sweet than Daphne's version. He then began serving the Painkiller at his own Pub and took the recipe around the world, all the while it is said that he did give full credit to Daphne for the drink. A couple of notes on this recipe: I didn't use Pusser's rum, I used another Navy strength Rum Smith and Cross which made a damned fine drink. Also I omitted the Nutmeg on top just because at the time this was filmed I was out of fresh Nutmeg and I don't like to put preground stuff into drinks. So definitely add fresh grated Nutmeg on top of the ice for a more traditional Painkiller. All recipes on this series are my preferred version and won't always be the most traditional, but the version I prefer.
