Nico Muhly THE LAST LETTER (2015): I. Dear Molly (0:00) II. Jack — (2:35) III. Dear Leader of the Company (5:24) IV. Dear Husband (7:40) V. Fair world, where are you? (11:47) Performed in concert by Zanda Švēde (mezzo-soprano) and Reinis Zariņš (piano) Venue: Dzintari Concert hall Video by Edmunds Mickus Originally composed for and dedicated to baritone Benjamin Appl, commissioned by the Barbican Centre and the European Concert Hall Organisation, this powerful cycle of songs looks at some of the last letters people sent to each other during the Great War. The texts for the songs are all written in prose and found in a compilation book called "Love Letters of the Great War", edited by Mandy Kirkby, except the last song which uses Richard Wigmore’s translation of Schiller’s poem "The Gods of Greece". Regarding our daring to perform a song cycle written for baritone -- we make note that, in fact, three of the five songs are letters written by a woman, only one by a man, and one is a poem that doesn't reveal its anguished speaker.
