Rihards Dubra VISIONS OF THE PASSION. LIGHT (2023) Rihards Dubra KRUSTACEĻA VĪZIJAS. GAISMA (2023) (based on the liturgy of Stations of the Cross) commissioned and performed by pianist Reinis Zariņš Photos from performances in GORS (Rēzekne, Latvia), Dzintari concert hall (Jūrmala, Latvia), Hanzas Perons (Rīga, Latvia) and St Cuthbert’s church (Edinburgh, Scotland). Photographers: Aivars Ivbulis, Veronika Lokotko, Pauls Zvirbulis, Dane Murdoch This is a compilation of audio excerpts from Rihards Dubra’s monumental new piano cycle, VISIONS OF THE PASSION. LIGHT, as well as a compilation of representative photos from the first four performances of this work. Since each venue has its own character, possibilities and limitations, Reinis Zariņš works with the respective local lights technician to realise his vision of the added layer of lights narrative. As this video affirms, there are as many solutions as there are halls and people, so it is possible to create not only musically but also visually stunning experience in many different ways. In particular, Reinis enjoyed the challenge of performing this work in an ancient church building that cannot offer the modern lighting rigs. In contrast to the black-box stage solutions, here Reinis chose to light various elements of the church’s interior design — a dramatic relief of the Last Supper, a sculpture of Mary, a fresco of the risen Christ, because these characters and stories are painted in Dubra's music, as it moves through the 15 Stations of the Cross. However, it must be said that Dubra’s music does not require any special lights at all — it is a soul-searching, at times troubling, but ultimately hope-filled work of music which speaks powerfully to anyone willing to give it their undivided attention. The lights narrative is only meant to punctuate the Passion story and to frame the music’s voice.
