22 AI and the City: New Frontiers in Algorithmic Transparency

NYC School of Data 2024 - March 23, 2024 22 AI and the City: New Frontiers in Algorithmic Transparency Renata Gerecke - Algorithms Reporting Manager, NYC Office of Technology & Innovation In 2020, New York City published a first-of-its-kind, comprehensive directory of algorithmic tools used by the City with a public impact, reporting on 16 tools used by 9 agencies. As artificial intelligence has developed and matured, City adoption of AI tools has increased and our reporting expanded. The 2023 directory contains a record number of tools supporting across a wide range of applications, including public health, education, safety, and more. Additionally, launching this year, this information will be made available to the public through the Open Data portal, allowing us to explore trends in AI adoption across the City and over time. In this talk, we will explore the history of the City's algorithmic tools directory, compare it with similar registries from other municipalities, examine where and how algorithmic tools are being used by the City, and consider how the directory may expand to meet the future of AI.
