The Herero call it "Omumborombonga", the sacred tree from which the first human (Makuru) descended. Its scientific names is Combretum imberbe, part of the large bushwillow family. It is perhaps best known as the Leadwood tree, so named because its timber sinks in water. Without doubt one of the most magnificent trees of the southern African bush, and it also harbours one of its stranger traditional uses. Back in the day, its bark was used by Ndebele warriors to keep their teeth clean. Join Gus, the African Plant Hunter, as he delves into this fascinating tree while in Chizarira National Park in north-western Zimbabwe.
