On our Outer Hebrides road trip we explore the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, visiting Aird Uig and the abandoned RAF Gallan Head radar station — a remote Cold War military site overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. 0:00 Drive To Aird Uig 6:40 RAF Buildings 10:04 Scenic Drive 12:38 Chessmen King 14:00 Napoleonic Wars 16:39 The Golden Road 21:05 Moorland Fire 22:44 Longest Village 24:57 Park Up 26:26 Next Time We explore an abandoned RAF base, dramatic coastal scenery, local island history and one of the most remote landscapes in the Scottish Western Isles. High above the cliffs sits a former Royal Air Force listening post built as part of Britain’s ROTOR defence network. Operating from 1954, the site later continued in use as a communications station before NATO occupation and final closure in 2010. Today the empty buildings remain one of the most isolated abandoned military locations in the UK. After exploring Gallan Head, we continue our scenic drive across the Isle of Lewis, travelling quiet single-track roads through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Western Isles. We stop to see the carved oak king inspired by the famous Lewis Chessmen before arriving at Uig Bay — a huge Atlantic beach with a surprising history. The Uig area was once a significant recruiting ground during the Napoleonic Wars, when many islanders left these remote shores to serve in the British Army. Following the coastline we drive the Golden Road and pass through Balallan, often described as the longest village in the UK, stretching along Loch Erisort through traditional crofting land. After nearly 13 hours filming around the island, we finally reach our overnight campervan park-up and reflect on another day travelling through the history, landscapes and stories of the Outer Hebrides. This series follows a slow journey around the Scottish Western Isles, searching out overlooked places, forgotten history and real locations beyond the typical tourist route. We travel the UK in our campervan sharing road trips, local history, hidden places and the stories we discover along the way. #OuterHebrides #IsleOfLewis #ScotlandRoadTrip #WesternIsles #GallanHead #RAFHistory #ColdWarHistory #AbandonedPlaces #VisitScotland #ScottishIslands #UKRoadTrip #CampervanTravel
