First Cookup & Overnight in My DIY Winter Shelter — Backcountry Newfoundland

Adventures with Cole Ep. 12 (Day 1) We head deep into the remote backcountry of western Newfoundland for a full solo overnight inside our previously built DIY winter tarp shelter. Travelling through rugged snow-covered terrain, we return to camp ready for a night of winter camping, wilderness exploring, and living out of our handmade shelter. After arriving at the shelter, we set up our winter sleeping system — a sturdy cot, insulated sleeping pad, and a -14°C rated sleeping bag — preparing for freezing overnight temperatures. Inside the shelter, we organize a small table and chair to create a comfortable backcountry living space before firing up the handmade woodstove. Once the fire gets going, the shelter quickly warms up, turning a cold winter structure into a cozy basecamp in the middle of the wilderness. With camp ready, we explore a nearby abandoned logging road that has been left untouched for years. Along the way we discover old logging cutovers slowly being reclaimed by nature, unique tree formations shaped by harsh winters, fresh rabbit tracks crossing the deep snow, and large moose tracks showing just how active the wildlife is in this remote area. As darkness settles in, we return to the shelter to prepare a hearty backcountry meal. Dinner features steak and stew cooked on the woodstove, followed by hot tea while relaxing beside the fire. After a full day of exploring remote terrain, cooking in the wild, and settling into winter shelter life, we get ready for a cold overnight inside the DIY tarp shelter, looking forward to the next day’s adventure.
