Gaining entry to a public university is the dream of many Malaysian students, thanks to affordable fees and strong academic resources. Yet for some families facing financial hardship, even this opportunity remains out of reach. In Selangor, one mother has endured every challenge, determined to help her three children transform their future through education. Lai Sin Hui scored 10 As in the Malaysian Certificate of Education, and later, with excellent pre-university results, she gained admission to Universiti Malaya (UM), Malaysia’s top-ranked university. Undergraduate | Lai Sin Hui I never expected to get into Universiti Malaya as Mum never placed high expectations on me. As long as I could study, it didn’t matter to her where I studied. Lai Sin Hui’s Mother | Yap Yoke Yin Education is important, but their emotional well-being matters even more. That’s what I believe, though I’m not highly educated. Working the whole day from morning till night is exhausting. Our children are just like us. So, don’t put too much pressure on them. Sin Hui’s dream of attending university was once nearly out of reach because her mother, a market vendor, couldn’t afford the required fees. Lai Sin Hui’s Mother | Yap Yoke Yin This path is extremely challenging. When you have no money, there’s no one you can borrow from. Tzu Chi Volunteer | Wong Foo Lay Back then, she looked physically and mentally exhausted. Because she worked herself too hard, she often fell sick. It was painful for us to see, and we felt deeply for her. Undergraduate | Lai Sin Hui When I began to realise how hard Mum worked to support us on her own, I felt I had to study faster, graduate faster and grow up faster. Every day after school, I’d study and revise on my own. Lai Sin Hui’s Mother | Yap Yoke Yin I never expected them to study to a very high level. Just strive to be decent people and work hard, they’ll have a future. They don’t need to be wealthy. Good health is what matters most. Tzu Chi’s financial support for Sin Hui’s family began in 2015 and has continued ever since. At that time, Sin Hui was only nine. Today, she’s already an outstanding undergraduate. Tzu Chi Volunteer | Wong Foo Lay Before, when our team visited her home, she’d hide in her room, reluctant to interact with us. She felt inferior and lacked confidence. Undergraduate | Lai Sin Hui When I was younger, I felt resentful because we didn’t get to go out to play with Mum. During holidays, other children went away with their parents, but Mum was always working and couldn’t spend time with us. That made me feel sad. But as I grew older, I understood she was working for our sake. So, I shouldn’t complain. Lai Sin Hui’s Mother | Yap Yoke Yin I couldn’t give them much. I didn’t have the means. So, I told them, as a mother, all I could do was let them study and ensure they had enough to eat. Undergraduate | Lai Sin Hui I’m grateful to Mum. She’s worked so hard. I think she was forced into this situation. When Dad passed away so suddenly, she had no choice but to persevere, step forward bravely and start working. I’m really grateful for her tremendous efforts for the three of us. I hope that one day, I can support her in return. Sin Hui’s father passed away from a heart condition, leaving her mother to raise three young children alone. As her small business failed to improve, life felt like an unsolvable knot, tightly bound by fate. Lai Sin Hui’s Mother | Yap Yoke Yin When I became completely exhausted, the emotions would suddenly overwhelm me. I was afraid I might fall into depression. Everyone needs someone to talk to. Thankfully, I met Tzu Chi. The volunteers would check on me, asking how I was coping. They felt closer to me than my own relatives. Undergraduate | Lai Sin Hui The volunteers offered Mum encouragement, and that helped her persevere until today. It’s all thanks to Tzu Chi and the volunteers’ dedication. My admission to Universiti Malaya is also partly thanks to their support. In 2024, Sin Hui secured a place in a matriculation programme, with Tzu Chi covering her enrolment fees and providing a laptop. In 2025, Tzu Chi supported her enrolment and first-semester tuition fees upon her admission to UM. REPORT reported by lim eng yee n lim yen kuan , My Daai ,Malaysia
