This is Episode 10 of the Hull & Barnsley Series, we are following the line all the way from Alexandra Dock in Hull through to Stairfoot, for previous episodes click the links in the description box or the playlist card above. The starting point of this week’s episode is west of Eastrington, on the embankment leading to Bridge 80 over the Hull to Selby Railway, we find some really interesting finds in this episode so keep watching and make sure you’re subscribed to ALW Research team! It is worth of note that originally there was two signal box’s at howden on the east and west ends of the goods yard, Howden East had a level crossing over Selby Road. The River Ouse bridge was built as part of the original construction of the Hull and Barnsley Railway. It consisted of three spans; two were 81 ft bowstring lattice girder approach spans with a central swinging span of 248 ft, also of lattice girder design. Complete with a central operating cabin at the swing bridge centre located above the track. This controlled the hydraulic motor house that was built upon the central pier, providing the motive force to open and close the bridge. The swing bridge gave two river openings of 100 ft, carrying the double track between Drax Abbey and Barmby stations. The bridge was first swung on 6 August 1884, after closure of the line, being retained by British Railways Board in reserve for future use until 1968, the bridge was finally dismantled in 1977.
