"What is the most successful way to gain podcast listeners?" This was a question that I was asked when I was interviewed in a recent interview. My answer to this question came in two different ways. For years I would hear online marketers share conflicting reports about climbing to the top of the podcast charts on iTunes. What they weren't mentioning was that they had a built-in audience of email list subscribers that aided in helping them reach the top of the charts. There were comedy podcasts, storytelling podcasts, fitness podcasts, etc. To a degree, these podcasts are businesses, but I have certainly known of podcasters who have started out with zero podcast listeners and grew to having THOUSANDS of podcast listeners because of one reason: THEIR CONTENT WAS REALLY GOOD and they asked their listeners to share their podcast with their friends. The first most successful way to gain podcast listeners is by posting podcasts every single day. Daily podcasts can be as short as 10 minutes and as long as 30 minutes. I can't say that the frequency of your release schedule will help or harm, but because Apple Podcasts isn't like Google, the podcaster is going to probably have to take a deeper interest in promoting their podcast through social platforms in order to gain those listeners. I see this happen a lot on Instagram and Twitter. This is why it's super important you understand the social media platforms and how they operate. Guests are a great way to drive traffic to your podcast. It doesn't matter if those guests only give you 2 or 3 subscriptions to your podcast because they are 2 or 3 more subs that you didn't have before. On the flip side of that coin, it's also beneficial to show up on other people's podcasts as the expert in your field. You can achieve this by searching Apple Podcasts for podcasts that are in the niche you want to be found.
