In this question to the NSW Parliament, I ask the Attorney General about the recent finding by the NSW State Coroner that 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people died in custody this year—a “profoundly distressing milestone.” I raise concerns about the Government’s progress in implementing the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system, and every death in custody is a tragedy that underscores the urgent need for action. The Greens are calling for: Stronger measures to prevent deaths in custody and protect vulnerable populations. Investment in culturally appropriate programs, including Circle Sentencing and Bail Advocacy. Support for diversionary measures, youth justice programs, and community-led initiatives to address crime and its root causes. Addressing systemic inequalities and improving justice outcomes is critical to closing the gap and ensuring Aboriginal communities are safe and supported.
