The Southern California Horticultural Society is pleased to welcome Douglas Kent for a talk about his latest book, Regenerating Goods and Services in Urban Landscapes. With over 13 years of development and research across the state that culminated in this book, he will share many examples of this comprehensive work during his presentation. From energy to food, building materials, ceremonial items, public health, and self-care, Kent will make the case that growing these human necessities has never been more important. He believes that urban areas can, if not should, help shoulder the needs of their consumptive residents, and prevent those needs from damaging or destroying remaining wildland areas. As a professional horticulturalist, activist, and educator in ecological land management, Kent has been exploring the dynamics and ecology of human sustainability since 1988. He has written eight environmental land management books as well as many gardening articles. Along with managing a horticultural design/consulting business, Kent also teaches at Cal Poly Pomona’s Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies, UCLA Extension Horticulture/Design, and USC’s School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture + Urbanism. His work can be viewed at www.anfractus.com, where you can also purchase his books. This program will be a fascinating exploration of growing essential goods and services in Southern California’s urban landscapes. We look forward to hearing from Kent, whose talks are known for being dynamic, fun, educational, and enlightening.
