Located in the county of North Yorkshire, and around 25 miles north of Leeds, is the city of Ripon. Geographically, Ripon is situated just east of the Yorkshire Dales, close to the confluence of the River Ure and River Skell, a tributary of the former. The recorded history of Ripon dates back to circa 657 AD when a monastery was founded here. When St Wilfrid became abbot of the monastery, he rebuilt it, along with a church in 672 on the site of what is today Ripon Cathedral. The original Saxon crypt from this period survives to this day. During the 9th century the monastery, along with much of Ripon itself, was destroyed by the Vikings. In the 10th century King Athelstan granted Ripon the privilege of Sanctuary after bringing Northumbria into the new Kingdom of England. This applied to an area within one mile of the church. In 1132 Fountains Abbey was founded. Situated around four miles southwest of Ripon, it became one of the wealthiest monasteries in England up until 1539 when it was seized by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. During the 12th century construction began on the present Ripon Cathedral atop the surviving crypt from the aforementioned structure built by St Wilfrid in the 7th century. Prior to 1836 it was known as Ripon Minster. Additions were made up until 1547. Among these were a central spire which crashed through the roof in 1660 following a storm, and additional spires on the western towers which were dismantled in 1664 as a subsequent safety precaution. At the centre of Ripon is its market square, whose history goes back to medieval times. The central obelisk dates from 1702 and was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, protégé of Christopher Wren. It is referenced in Daniel Defoe's A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain from the 1720s. Restoration work was carried out in 1781, at which point the weather vane on top was added. It is at the obelisk where an 1100-year-old tradition takes place, namely the setting of the watch by the Ripon Hornblower. Each night at 9pm a ceremonial horn is sounded from four directions in sequence. This dates back to the time when Ripon was a Saxon exclave surrounded by Viking territory. The sounding of the horn was to let the locals know the wakeman was on duty, and would be patrolling the streets to ensure the locals slept safely. The wakemen allegedly became more authoritative over time, and by 1604 the people of Ripon informed King James I of the situation. In response, James I removed the wakeman and created the first Mayor of Ripon. The mayor ordered a hornblower to sound the horn as a nod to this tradition, which has continued to the present day. The horn is a symbol of the city and features on its coat of arms. In 1836 Ripon Minster was upgraded to a cathedral, and became the diocesan seat of the Bishop of Ripon from that same year. However, city status wasn't officially granted until 1865. With a population of just over 16,000 according to the 2021 census, Ripon is one of the smallest cities in England. In 1848 a railway station opened in Ripon courtesy of the Leeds and Thirsk Railway. This became a stop on the now partly defunct Leeds-Northallerton Line. Services still run between Leeds and Harrogate as part of a line to York. However, Ripon Station closed to passengers in 1967 as part of the Beeching Cuts - a controversial move to promote road travel by closing over 2,000 stations in Great Britain. Today, public transport to Ripon consists of regular bus services from Leeds via Harrogate, and less regular bus services from Thirsk, Boroughbridge and various nearby settlements. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
