Located in the county of Worcestershire, and around three miles south of Kidderminster, is the town of Stourport-on-Severn. The history of Stourport-on-Severn essentially dates back to 1772 with the completion of the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal. Prior to this, the only settlements in the area were the hamlets of Upper and Lower Mitton around the confluence of the Rivers Stour and Severn. In 1766 an Act of Parliament was passed, authorising the construction of the canal, overseen by engineer James Brindley. In the years that followed, Stourport grew into a prosperous Georgian canal town. In addition to being the southern terminus of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal, it once was home to several industries situated around its basins. These included brass and iron foundries, tanneries, spinning mills and boat building yards, among others. In 1862 a railway station opened in Stourport-on-Severn. This formed part of the Severn Valley Railway which ran between Shrewsbury and Hartlebury. The station closed in 1970, however. Today, public transport to Stourport consists of direct buses from Kidderminster, Worcester, Bewdley and various other nearby locations. From the early to mid 20th century, traffic along the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal declined. However, a major lottery-funded restoration project took place during the early 2000s, giving the waterways a new lease of life with the town becoming a popular destination for narrowboat enthusiasts. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
