Located along the southeastern stretch of coast of the Isle of Wight, which is separated from the south coast of mainland England by the Solent Strait, is the town of Shanklin. For most of its history, Shanklin was a tiny fishing community consisting of around a dozen fishermen's cottages. These can be seen at the very start of the walk, in the area known as Shanklin Old Village. One of Shanklin's early visitors was poet John Keats, who stayed here in 1819. A number of hotels opened soon afterwards as saltwater bathing gained popularity. Queen Victoria elevated the status of the Isle of Wight as a whole during the mid-19th century upon the opening of her royal residence Osborne House in East Cowes. This, plus the subsequent arrival of the railways, helped to bring about significant transformation to the towns of the island, including Shanklin. In 1864 the railway arrived in Shanklin. From 1866 to 1966 the line continued south to the town of Ventnor, until the Beeching Cuts of the 1960s left Shanklin as the southern terminus of the line, linking up to the town of Ryde to the north. This remains the case to this day. The trains used comprise of former London Underground stock. During the 1880s, the Esplanade was developed, replacing a sea wall from the 1840s. In 1890 Shanklin Pier opened. This stood at 1,200 feet long (around 365 metres) and featured a bandstand, a 500-seat pavilion and a pier head landing stage. However, a large section of the pier was destroyed during the infamous storm of 1987. Having decided it was beyond repair, the council demolished it in 1993. In 1957 Shanklin Cliff Lift opened, replacing a hydraulic lift preceding it from 1891. This provides an alternative link between the beach and the town centre, which is about 180 feet above sea level at its peak. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
