Uganda and Kenya are reviewing their railway cooperation agreement, originally signed in 1998, to align it with current realities. Trade between the two countries stood at over USD 1.5 billion in 2025, underscoring the urgent need for fast and reliable transport systems beyond road networks. Uganda continues to send the bulk of its commodity exports through the Kenyan port of Mombasa and has already announced plans to link its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project with Kenya’s network — an initiative still underway. Under the new framework, both countries are also considering linking to Tanzania, which has emerged as a crucial trade hub for landlocked states.
