Every year over 19,000 children in Africa are born with clefts-which is a gap in the upper lip and or palate. In Kenya, 1 out of 10 children are born with the congenital deformity which can easily be corrected with surgery. Unfortunately less than half of them do not get the necessary treatment mainly due to lack of funds. Until a few years ago these children had no real hope but that was before Dr. Esther Njoroge made it her life’s mission to ensure that children under 5 years old born with cleft lip or palate get reconstructive surgery.
