If you thought Great Houghton had a lot of open space, then just a mile or two further North, you'll find yourself surrounded by much, much more. Barnsley's former colliery industry may have disappeared but all that space that the mines used to occupy has to be used somehow these days, and in true Yorkshire thriftiness fashion, nothing goes to waste! Today's parish sees us encounter another of those colliery spoil tips that have been repurposed, but not before the village itself which has so much green space! There's more to this place than the wide open air though. Much more. Take for example, the working men's club, which at one time would have been the hub of the mining community, and the Methodist church, still bringing people together even in these hard times. Once described as one of Barnsley's most deprived areas, I personally think the residents of this place do well for themselves, they've certainly got a lot on their doorstep that other parishes would love to have. It's an odd part of the borough. It's surrounded on three sides by unparished areas like Brierley (who's town council was abolished in 2016), and the only other parish it borders is over the county border into Wakefield, West Yorkshire. So then, it sits all on it's own to the North East of Barnsley borough. I present to you, in glorious summer-like weather (at the end of March, believe it or not!)., SHAFTON. **** My name is Andy.
