In this video, Clinical Director of Speech and Language Pathology at MeBe, Nikki Rosner, shares how parents or caregivers can read children’s stories in a way that promotes speech and language development. Pete the Cat is a great book for little ones not only because it is simple, but also because there is a lot of repetition. Repetition is very important for kiddos working on their speech and language skills because it helps them understand what language is to be expected. This book also had loads of opportunities to use very simple sign language for nouns like shoes or cat as well as adjectives like colors. Simple sign language used in combination with verbal communication helps model communications skills in a number of ways. Research shows that the use of sign language and other communication techniques increase your child's likelihood to verbalize, if they have the ability. For kids who struggle with participating or “attending” during storytime, Nikki suggests reading the book a little quicker and pausing on pages where you can adlib sound effects like rain falling or animal noises. For older kiddos, you can pause and ask ‘why’ questions. This helps validate their reading and language comprehension. There’s no need to throw away your books! The same books can be used across different age groups, though how you interact with and read the book changes depending on the audience. For the 1-3 year olds, we might skip reading the words at all, and instead focus on sound effects or pointing to objects on the page. For the 3-5 year olds, we might be reading the story from start to finish with pauses for onomatopeias. For 5-7 year olds we might use this book to practice reading out loud, or asking those ‘why’ questions, and reading comprehension skills.
