In this video, Clinical Director of Speech and Language Pathology at MeBe, Nikki Rosner, shares how parents or caregivers can encourage self-advocating language with their littles by making silly mistakes. For example, you might provide a fork instead of a spoon with your child’s cereal. The idea here is to motivate your child to ask for a spoon, to speak up for themselves instead of simply taking what's been given to them. This concept can be used in a number of different scenarios. By providing your child with something unexpected or out of the ordinary, you are giving them an opportunity to advocate for themselves or inquire further. Let’s say you’re going to the pool, instead of handing them a pool noodle, give them an umbrella. This unexpected item might cause confusion, but not enough to send them into an emotional fit, but rather encourages them to ask ‘why?’. This video is part of our series on speech and language skills and is presented by Nikki Rosner, MA, CCC-SLP, MeBe Clinical Director of Speech & Language Pathology.
