Strengthening the tongue is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve swallowing safety, oral control, and speech clarity. When the tongue is weak, food and liquid may fall into the cheeks, move too quickly toward the throat, spill before you're ready to swallow, or make chewing and speaking feel exhausting. This is extremely common after stroke, in Parkinson’s disease, and in general age-related muscle weakness. Tongue exercises help retrain oral muscles so they can work with more precision, coordination, and endurance — leading to safer, more efficient swallowing and clearer speech.
