Night terrors is a common Non REM parasomnia sleep condition, characterised by a sudden arousal out of Non REM slow wave sleep, with shouting and screaming. More common in children but some adults still have night terrors. Particularly disruptive to the partner's sleep as well. Priming factors include sleep deprivation and hyperarousal state in sleep driven by anxiety. They are different from Nightmares which occur in REM sleep or dream sleep. Those with night terrors of minimal recall. Medications may be used to control them such as melatonin or clonazepam but not always successful and may cause side effects. If anxiety is thought to be a driver, one option may be to consider Cannabidiol or CBD oil at night.
