Mission Tunisia Day 3, Part 1: City of Tunis, Medina, The Cathedral, The Avenues. Beautiful Capital . مهمة الطبيعة في تونس، اليوم الثالث، الجزء الأول: مدينة تونس، المدينة العتيقة، الكاتدرائية، الشوارع. عاصمة جميلة . Follow Our Steps on Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZdW2ZNLqxK7yd... . Tunis is the sprawling capital of Tunisia, a country in North Africa. It sits along Lake Tunis, just inland from the Mediterranean Sea’s Gulf of Tunis. It’s home to a centuries-old medina and the Bardo, an archaeology museum where celebrated Roman mosaics are displayed in a 15th-century palace complex. The parklike ruins of ancient Carthage sit in the city’s northern suburbs. . A Day in the Medina of Tunis Place de l’Indépendance, beneath the tall palms and in front of the Cathedral of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, a 19th-century French colonial landmark. Its neo-Romanesque arches and Moorish details remind us of the layered presence of France in Tunis’s story. From there, we passed through Bab el Bhar, the old city gate, and stepped into the living heart of the Medina. Hidden behind its walls we found the Dars, traditional mansions with quiet courtyards, fountains, and gardens. Stucco carvings, colorful zellige tiles, and mashrabiya woodwork whispered of Ottoman refinement and the grandeur of merchant families. We then breathed in the scents of Souk el-Attarine, the perfumers’ market active since the 13th century. Amber, musk, rosewater, incense, and herbs filled the air. Narrow alleys and domed ceilings revealed the Medina’s medieval soul, still alive with trade, fragrance, and color. The walk reached its peak at the Great Mosque of Tunis Al-Zaytouna. Its Andalusian courtyard, Aghlabid minaret, and ancient Carthaginian columns spoke of a thousand years of faith and scholarship. Here, religion and knowledge have intertwined for centuries, shaping the spirit of the city. In one day, Tunis revealed its layers: • French colonial elegance at the Cathedral • Ottoman and Arab artistry in the Dars • Medieval commercial life at Souk el-Attarine • Spiritual and intellectual depth at Al-Zaytouna Mosque A single walk through the Medina becomes a journey across civilizations, faiths, and cultures woven together in the living fabric of Tunis. .
