Workshop Porject #45 - TLS-5 (and TAP 80K) Note: I completely forgot to do the "music lower during speech" thing ("ducking") this time. I hope it is not too distracting... It's time to venture into telephony for a little bit! I have a few devices in that venue, but mostly haven't touched them so far. Why? Because they require a phone system to work, and analog phone systems are either way too complicated or not up to standard. A video by @CathodeRayDude made me aware of a nifty little box that is exactly what I was looking for: a very simple test bed for phones! No fuss about PBX configuration, just plug in and dial to test. That's it. I was lucky enough to find a unit for sale within a halfway decent price range and took on to clean it up and adapt it for 240V use; the original transformers were strictly 115V ones. The complete lack of a circuit diagram made it a bit iffy... not to mention me being a bit tired during the process. I ended up with a nice collection of blown fuses because of that. To test that box, I dug out the most basic phone I have around and gave it a once over too! 0:00 Intro / Overview 1:35 First look inside / Transformer Desoldering 3:10 Transformer Issue / Recapping 4:50 Taller Caps Issue and Checkup 7:00 Transformer Soldering (improv!) 10:00 Sanity Check / Assembly / New Fuse 11:28 First Try! / Issue... / First Problem 12:55 Soldering Transformer (again!) / Second Problem 14:35 Power on! / Quick Phone Check / Sticker Replacement 16:22 Phone Disassembly / Some Background Info 18:23 Handset Disassembly 19:26 Dial Pad Disassembly and Recapping 21:33 Cleanup! / Assembly 23:40 Handset rebuild 25:10 Main Unit Assembly 27:00 Trying some Dialling... / Tone or Pulse? / Oh!
