The low input block at the BHU traces its history back to 1940s England. There some people in the organic movement believed that you could farm organically without using fertilisers, i.e., replacing nutrients removed in harvest. Let me be very clear, they are completely wrong. But the idea took hold and thus it was tested at the BHU with three blocks under low, medium and high inputs. After the change when the charitable trust took over the medium and high input blocks ended up being farmed as normal but the low input block remains. It has now not had any fertilisers / nutrients applied to it for some forty years and also no agrichemical pesticides nor livestock. It is therefore a unique resource within Aotearoa New Zealand and is used by scientists such as soil microbiologists looking for interesting microbes. It also stands as a warning to humanity about the vital importance of replacing non-nitrogen nutrients otherwise agriculture will fail.
