False seedbeds are a key means of mechanical weed management in annual cropping systems like vegetables and arable. It’s based on the fact that most weeds in cropping systems have small seeds so can only emerge from the top few centimetres / inch of soil. The ground is cultivated / tilled, then left till the weed flush emerges then killed with the false seedbed cultivator, which, as only goes a few centimetres / inch deep it does not bring up new seed from deeper down.
