Brachyspira is a bacterial genus of intestinal spirochetes which, using their periplasmic flagella, are motile and have a characteristic snake like pattern of movement. In this video you can see a hanging drop preparation of live Brachyspira murdochii magnified 1,000X. As the bacteria swim through the broth, they move into and out of focus. Organisms within this genus including Brachyspira hyzdysenteriae, hampsonii, pilosicoli and others are associated with diarrheic illnesses in a variety of domestic animal species. Human intestinal spirochetosis, associated primarily with Brachyspira pilosicoli and aalborgi is also recognized. These bacteria are aero-tollerant anaerobes, which like to grow in temperatures up to 42C. Brachyspira also don't form discrete colonies on agar making it more difficult to isolate them in pure culture than "easy" bacteria like E. coli or Staphylococcus aureus. Special thank you to Champika Fernando and the Hill lab for providing the culture which was imaged for this video.
