In this detailed video guide features we will show you the preparation for laying turf, helping you transform your garden with a healthy new lawn. Proper preparation is the critical step for ensuring strong root growth and long-term lawn health. Follow the below steps to prepare your garden for laying turf: 1. Check Your Soil & Improve It: Dig a small hole to identify your soil type. If the structure is poor, we recommend using a soil improver. Pre-turfing fertiliser is essential for strong root growth and feeding your new lawn in the first few months. We recommend using Rolawn turf and lawn seeding topsoil. 2. Choose the Right Turf: Rolawn offers two types of turf, both supplied in rolls of one square meter when harvested: Medallion: A multi-purpose, high-quality turf with good visual appearance. It is 99.9% weed-free and suitable for people with children and pets. Minster Pro: Designed for feature lawns and formal gardens, originally used for golf courses. Its deeper roots give it tolerance to drought and shade. 3. Calculate Your Quantity: Draw a sketch of the area, split it into rectangles, and measure the lengths and widths in meters. Calculate the area of each rectangle (length x width) and add them up for the combined square meterage. Add 5% extra turf for shaping and cutting. For topsoil, multiply the area by the depth to find the required volume. 4. Remove Existing Lawn & Refine Soil: Apply a suitable weed killer to prevent old weeds from emerging. Remove your current lawn using a turf cutter (the waste can be composted or recycled). Use a rotavator to break up and aerate the soil to a depth of 150mm. Rake to break down clods of earth, removing all weeds, stones, and debris. Firm up the soil by walking backwards and forwards with your weight on your heels. Apply a pre-turfing fertiliser evenly at the specified rate and rake it into the top 25mm of soil. Finally, rake to a fine level finish or tilt. The finer the tilt, the better the contact for quick lawn establishment.
