In Episode 8 of my motorcycle journey from Mexico to Argentina, I cross my first Central American border and officially enter Guatemala on my KTM 390 Adventure. This episode is full of surprises, beautiful destinations, a bit of chaos, and some unforgettable moments that mark a major milestone in the trip! The day kicks off in Tenosique, Tabasco, where I realize, after loading up my gear, that I forgot to program my GPS. No big deal, right? Well… turns out, the super high-tech Garmin I’m using doesn’t even include Central America maps! (How is that even possible?!). So I resort to my phone for directions, memorizing the route and setting off towards the Guatemala border, hoping for the best. On my way to the border I'm stopped by the Mexican authorities - I'm not quite sure if they were Mexican police or military. After navigating the Mexican side, I crossed into Guatemala and started the process on the Central American side of the border. Immigration was smooth and even a bit fun, especially when the Guatemalan officer, also a motorcycle enthusiast, asked if I had a sticker for his office wall. Of course I did! From there, it was a test of patience. I had to get my motorcycle fumigated, wait for Customs (who were on an extra longlunch break), and walk across the border to get copies and pay fees. After nearly three hours, I was finally in Guatemala! The road from the border to Isla de Flores was beautiful, although I had to rely on my phone (which was in my pocket!) to navigate. But I made it and wow, was it worth it. Isla de Flores is a charming little town built entirely on an island in a lake, with cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and gorgeous lakeside views. I found a great hotel on the waterfront and spent the evening exploring this hidden gem. The next morning, I spent the day exploring the island and the following day I set off on a guided tour to the Tikal archaeological site, one of the most spectacular Mayan ruins in the world. I was blown away, not just by the towering ancient pyramids, but by how they’re hidden in the dense jungle. Unlike other sites I’ve visited, you don’t see the temples all at once. You hike through the rainforest, and suddenly one looms above you like something out of a movie, which is fitting, since scenes from Star Wars and James Bond were both filmed here! From Temple I (Temple of the Great Jaguar) to Temple IV, the views are breathtaking, the history fascinating, and the wildlife, like coatis and monkeys, adds an extra dose of magic. I even made some new friends on the tour from Mexico and Spain. This was my first time visiting Guatemala, and it’s already exceeded expectations. Between the border crossing adventure, the unexpected charm of Isla de Flores, and the awe-inspiring grandeur of Tikal, this was one for the books. Stay tuned for the next episode as I head to Lanquín, Guatemala and explore the stunning rivers of the region.
