Blackdemonium is the sixth and final studio album by the legendary Greek black metal band Astarte, pioneers as the genre's first all-female lineup. Recorded between 2013 and 2014, the album remained shelved for over a decade following the tragic death of frontwoman Maria “Tristessa” Kolokouri (vocalist, bassist, and main songwriter) in August 2014, a victim of leukemia. Only in March 2025 did Sleaszy Rider SRL announce that the material was finally mixed and mastered by Steve Lado (a close friend of Tristessa) and ready for release—which ended up happening in October of the same year. “More black, more thrash, more death!”—that's how the band itself summarized the album. Blackdemonium abandons some of the melodic Greek atmosphere of previous albums (Sirens, Demonized) and plunges into extreme blackened death/thrash: sharp, fast riffs reminiscent of Slayer and early Sepultura; furious blast beats from Ice (drums); guttural vocals divided between Tristessa's raspy aggression and Nicolas Maiis' (her husband) deep growls; raw, yet modern production that enhances the ferocity without losing the classic darkness of Hellenic black metal. Recurring themes: spiritual warfare, ancient gods, the chaos of the modern world, and the fight against death—a direct reflection of Tristessa's personal battle against illness. Dark cover art created by All Things Rotten: a winged black demon emerging from a flaming monolith, in shades of blood-red and gray—perfect for gatefold vinyl. Why is it special? This is Tristessa's final testament: her voice, recorded months before her passing, sounds angrier and more urgent than ever. It closes a 20-year cycle for Astarte (1995-2014) and opens the way for the Lloth project (the band's original name), which the remaining members reactivated in her honor. Released on a deluxe digipak CD, colored LP (black/red splatter), and cassette tape—extremely limited editions that sold out in pre-orders. If you enjoy Rotting Christ, early Dimmu Borgir, or extreme 80s thrash, Blackdemonium is a must-have. Eleven years of waiting were worth every second: the goddess Astarte returns from the dead to remind us that extreme metal is also made of flesh, blood, and tears. Listen on the official Bandcamp or YouTube (title track already available) and feel Tristessa's eternal fury echo louder than ever.
