Psalm Prelude, Set 2, No. 1 'De Profundis' by Herbert Howells performed by Ben Bloor on the 53 stop B.C. Shepherd & Sons organ of Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church in London in a live recital on Saturday 26th November 2023. Herbert Howells' six psalm preludes, in two sets of three, are some of his most evocative organ music, and as the title suggests, all take their inspiration from a psalm verse. In the case of the first prelude of the second set, Howells subtitles it 'De profundis', the Latin for the opening verse of psalm 130 - 'Out of the deep have I cried unto you, O Lord'. After a ponderously bleak opening with the hands at opposite ends of the keyboard, Howells slowly builds up the momentum organically until the piece reaches a climactic release of almost jazzy harmony on full organ, before dying away to nearly nothing, in typical Howells fashion - but importantly ending on a more positive and comforting D major chord. Many thanks to Philip Luke for his invitation to play at Bloomsbury. Ben Bloor is Organist at the London Oratory Church and School Organist at Westminster School.
