If you’ve ever felt like your personality changes depending on who you’re talking to, you’re not crazy — it just means you have some degree of self-monitoring. Self-monitoring is basically just the extent to which you monitor and adjust your behavior and self-presentation in different social situations. So in other words, a low self-monitor would not adapt much to the social situation, and instead would act consistently no matter who they are with, always acting on their internal values and beliefs, whereas a high self-monitor would adapt to the social situation and act accordingly. Wikipedia makes it seem like it’s very good to be a high self-monitor and quite bad to be a low self-monitor, but the way I see it, there are benefits to both, and it would be best to strike a balance between the two. For me, for example, I find that I’m too high of a self-monitor and it makes me feel like I’m fake or a people pleaser — I’d like to feel more like I’m the same person no matter who I talk to (for the most part), because that comes off as more genuine. What are your thoughts on this? Are you a high or low self-monitor?
