A simple & quite low cost optical tape reader design I've been working on for a while. The data output is buffered, logic level, suitable for direct connection to a 5V (or 5V tolerant) MCU port, with a separately buffered signal from the sprocket hole track via an adjustable threshold comparator. No motor drive yet, as I wanted to confirm the electronics and optical part worked before going further! The stripboard part is just a way of displaying the data from the reader module to verify the output matches the tape data - nothing but LEDs with series resistors, and power connections.
