The Kvens are descendants of people who migrated from the northern areas of Finland and Sweden to Northern Norway over the course of the last several hundred years in search of work and a better life. This resulted in a culture and language distinct from Finnish. In 2005, the Norwegian government recognized Kven as an official minority language, and since that time activity related to Kven language and culture has blossomed. This talk will give some historical background on the Kvens, discuss the policy of Norwegianization that led to the decline of Kven identity and the Kven language, and will end by giving a glimpse into the whirlwind of activity related to Kven culture and language today. Daniel (Karvonen) Haataja is senior lecturer in Finnish and linguistics at the University of Minnesota, and spent the last two years teaching Finnish at UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø.
